Our Legacy

The Palo Alto Clinic had its inception in 1930, when seven physicians came together with a shared vision of providing quality health care to their community. The Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation was founded in 1950, and has since grown to become an internationally recognized center for basic and clinical research. In 1981, the Palo Alto Clinic physicians joined the Research Foundation scientists to form the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF). In late 1999, PAMF opened the doors to its new world-class medical facility. Soon after, PAMF formalized its affiliation with Camino Medical Group and the Santa Cruz Medical Clinic physicians, creating one of the largest multispecialty group practices in Northern California. Today, PAMF and its affiliates care for more than 650,000 patients throughout Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Alameda counties.

Your Opportunity

The Palo Alto Medical Foundation integrates clinical care with research and education in a private, not-for-profit group practice that is truly unique. Each day, our physicians, nurses, researchers, educators and other employees dedicate themselves to improving the lives of our patients and providing comfort to their families.

And each year, this spirit of generosity is returned in the form of philanthropic gifts from grateful patients, families and other community members who wish to support the continuation of our many programs, services and research projects. Now we invite you to take this opportunity to consider how you, too, might support the vital work of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation in the areas of medical care, research and community health education.

Many Ways to Give, Many Lives To Touch

Because the Palo Alto Medical Foundation is a not-for-profit institution, we depend on the philanthropic support of individuals, families, corporations and foundations to continue our work. There are many ways to give and, with each gift, many lives to touch. Your gift can be directed toward any area that holds particular meaning for you, or it can be an unrestricted gift to be applied wherever the need is greatest. Either way, we hope you will engage us as your partner in philanthropy, and let us know how we can help to make your gift reflect not only your generosity, but also your personal interests.

The PAMF Capital Fund

To strengthen presence

The PAMF Capital Fund was established in 1994 to facilitate the community philanthropy so vital to building our new campus in Palo Alto. For the first time in our history, this campus has brought together our multispecialty clinic, Research Institute and community health education facilities in one location. The PAMF Capital Fund continues so that we may anticipate the future needs of our clinics in Castro Valley, Dublin, Fremont, Los Altos, Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Redwood Shores and Redwood City. The Fund targets most of its resources to major capital projects, and also supports priority projects in the areas of endowment, research and technology.

The PAMF Annual Fund

To enable innovation

At the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, our greatest source of unrestricted support is the Annual Fund. This Fund allows us to attract and retain the very best clinicians and researchers so that we can continue our innovations in medical research, technology, health education and patient care. With support from the PAMF Annual Fund, we can make the most effective use of our resources to meet the needs of our patients and our community. Donors' contributions are recognized on an annual basis in our PAMF Annual Report and by member- ship in the Russel van Arsdale Lee Society, named in honor of the founder of the Palo Alto Medical Clinic.

Tribute Gifts

To honor connection

Very often, the wish to participate in philanthropy stems from a personal experience. A Tribute Gift is a wonderful way to honor your connection with people in your own life, or with the Foundation itself. You might make a Tribute Gift in memory of a loved one, or to express your gratitude for a kindness that was done for you or a family member. A Tribute Gift can also be made to honor a life transition or special occasion such as an anniversary or a birthday. Often, patients make Tribute Gifts to express appreciation for the care they received from a particular physician or a particular department. To learn more about making a Tribute Gift, contact the Office of Philanthropy, or see attached response form.

Planned Giving

To benefit generations

The Foundation offers a variety of Planned Giving options:

Gifts of Assets

Gifts to the Foundation are often made with assets other than cash. These gifts may include stocks, bonds or property. Examples of property gifts include real estate or personal property, such as works of art or other items of value. These gifts not only provide charitable deductions, but also offer additional tax savings.

Life-Income Gifts
Many philanthropic donors choose to make Life-Income Gifts, which provide an income stream along with significant tax savings. Please contact the Office of Philanthropy to find out more about Life-Income Gifts.

Charitable Trusts
By establishing a Charitable Remainder, Lead or Annuity Trust to benefit the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, you provide vital support for our current programs and services while greatly reducing estate and gift taxes for your heirs.

Bequests
When you include the Palo Alto Medical Foundation in your will and other estate plans, you can be assured that your generosity will support the healing mission of the Foundation's physicians and scientists for generations to come.
