Dr. Hartford received his M.D. degree from Dartmouth Medical School in 1989 after graduating from Princeton University. He completed a general surgery residency at Harvard-New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston and an orthopedic surgery residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. He also completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at Stanford University Medical Center.

Dr. Hartford served for six years as assistant professor in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and was residency director for orthopedic surgery at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington. He also was chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington. In those roles, he gained substantial experience with hip and knee replacements, including many complicated cases. Dr. Hartford has also published and lectured extensively on joint replacement and other topics in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Hartford joined PAMF in 2002 and is board certified in orthopedic surgery.

Hip Resurfacing Experience and Training

PAMF orthopedic surgeons, Drs. Hartford and Lannin, perform Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) and together have more than 30 years of experience in joint replacement surgery. In 2006, Dr. Hartford received training on the BHR procedure in Canada, and Dr. Lannin trained in England with Dr. Derek McMinn, developer of the BHR surgery prosthesis. In addition, both doctors have completed advanced fellowship training in joint replacement surgery and work together to provide patients with the most comprehensive care possible. To date, only a limited number of surgeons have been trained in this specialized procedure.

Doctors Hartford and Lannin were approached by the manufacturers to receive BHR training because they are fellowship-trained surgeons who have performed hip replacement and resurfacing surgeries for several years. They perform the hip resurfacing surgeries at PAMF together, and this has two main benefits: patients undergo surgery with two highly trained physicians, and the physicians are able to collaborate and provide their surgical expertise as a team.
