A cancer diagnosis is a physical and emotional challenge for any patient, and this is especially true for children. As these children undergo treatments, many of which take months, they typically have to leave school and peer groups behind just when they most need the routine of a classroom and the social support of friends.

To ensure pediatric cancer patients are less isolated during treatment, PAMF has donated $5,000 to Operation: CONNECT. This new program in the Fremont Unified School District lets children use online communication to stay in touch with friends and teachers while undergoing cancer treatment.

Students with cancer are given small computers designed for children that come equipped with video telephone capabilities and wireless Internet access, as well as educational and productivity software. The computers can be used either at home or in the hospital, providing a vital link to the academic and social benefits of the classroom for students who are either hospitalized or too weak to attend school.

"PAMF's gift enables us to purchase and set up five complete systems for students in the Fremont Unified School District," says D.A. Hotchkiss, Ph.D., chief technology officer for the school district. "Each system will help a child both keep up with school and maintain a connection to his or her classmates and teacher, which in turn helps bring a sense of normalcy and stability in an otherwise secluded experience."

"Operation: CONNECT is a visionary program that we are proud to fund,"said Janet Lederer, R.N., M.S., vice president of PAMF's Education Division. "We know very well of the pressures faced by cancer patients. Helping students stay active and engaged with their friends and classmates can be a significant source of strength in combating their illness."
