Bayer Healthcare and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are informing consumers about a Class 1 recall of one model of the Bayer Ascensia Contour Blood Glucose Monitoring System, Product 7152A. The meters are being recalled because of reports that the monitors are displaying values for the wrong units of measure for Canadian users only. This error could lead to possible overdosing of diabetes medicines and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Canadian users of the system have their readings displayed in units of mmol/L while users in the United States have their glucose readings displayed in units of mg/dL. The mismatch could cause the reading to be falsely elevated for Canadian users by as much as 10 times the actual value.
