Parents with teens or near-adult children who are about to leave home to attend school or pursue a career are encouraged to plan ahead now for where and how their child will obtain health care.

Most health insurers allow teens and young adults who are attending school to stay on a parent’s insurance plan. The network of health care providers and facilities where non-emergency care can be received, however, is restricted if the patient has an HMO, POS (point of service) or PPO (preferred provider organization) plan. Although virtually all health plans cover emergency services wherever they are needed, non-emergency services must be provided in network. This would include follow-up care for an emergency, such as physical therapy or other care required after a vehicle or sports accident.

Many colleges and vocational schools offer a basic health insurance plan that students can purchase, but the costs and exact services covered may vary. Therefore, it is important to review these plans carefully before signing up. Often, a supplemental plan may be offered through the college or school beyond the basic coverage and may include added services that might be needed while a child is away from home. If the school does not offer a supplemental plan, some health insurers may offer supplemental plans that allow children to get care closer to school.
