San Jose Earthquakes Name PAMF Official Health Care Provider

Team of physicians to oversee care of players, their families and staff

Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes recently named the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) as its official health care provider. The Earthquakes franchise returns to the Bay Area this year as an expansion team, having left San Jose after the 2005 season to become the Houston Dynamo.

“This is a terrific opportunity for PAMF,” said Colin Eakin, M.D., a PAMF sports medicine specialist. “Our comprehensive expertise as the area’s top multispecialty clinic, combined with our experience caring for elite athletes, made us a natural choice for the team.”

Dr. Eakin and Luis Folan, M.D., an internal medicine physician, will head a team of PAMF physicians who will oversee all aspects of the team’s care, including treating the players, their families and Earthquakes staff.

PAMF has considerable experience caring for top professional athletes, a key consideration in the team’s decision. The Earthquakes join the Oakland Raiders, whose orthopedic care is overseen by Warren King, M.D., as professional teams receiving care from PAMF physicians.

Further enhancing the PAMF Sports Medicine Department’s reputation of being at the forefront of care, Drs. King and Eakin were recently awarded the prestigious subspecialty certification in sports medicine, given jointly by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). This represents the first year that such certification became available, making both physicians charter members of this elite group. To be eligible, orthopedic surgeons from around the country had to document practice subspecialization within sports medicine and pass a rigorous examination demonstrating their knowledge on a variety of topics within the field.

Dr. King emphasized the subspecialty certification communicates expertise at the highest level within the field. “It is another indication to PAMF patients that the care they receive here is second to none whether they are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior,” said Dr. King.
