What is an Urgent Health Care Problem?

An urgent health problem is any serious illness or injury that must be treated promptly, but is not life-threatening and does not require emergency room care. Below are some examples of conditions that can be effectively treated at PAMF’s Pediatric Urgent Care Center.

• Accidents and falls
  
• Broken bones
  
• Breathing difficulties
  
• Severe abdominal pain
  
• Bleeding/cuts
  
• High fever
  
• Vomiting/diarrhea/dehydration

How Are Children Seen in Pediatric Urgent Care?

We believe that families with children are more satisfied when they have an appointment to address their medical needs; therefore, we run on an appointment-based model of care. Appointments are scheduled every 15 minutes. Please understand that we may have emergencies that increase our wait times. If you would like for your child to be seen in Pediatric Urgent Care, please call 650-853-6558, and we will schedule your child for the next available appointment.

While Pediatric Urgent Care is open until 9 p.m., we recommend you and your child come in for an appointment as early as possible in the day in the event you are referred to the Radiology or Laboratory departments for tests.

What Happens If I Walk in Without an Appointment?

We will do our best to accommodate you and your child if you walk in without a scheduled appointment. If our triage nurse deems your child’s condition urgent, your child will be seen as soon as possible. However, if your child’s problem is not determined to be urgent, you will be given the next available appointment. We ask for your patience, especially if you are here at a time when many other patients have also come in without an appointment. We recognize your time is valuable, and we will do our best to take care of you and others as quickly and safely as possible.

What Happens When I Arrive at Pediatric Urgent Care?

Upon arriving at the Pediatric Urgent Care Center, you will sign in with one of the patient service representatives (PSRs) so we may obtain the necessary information to treat your child. As soon as an exam room is available, one of our nurses or medical assistants will escort you to the exam room and take your child’s vital signs and a brief medical history. A pediatrician will then see you as soon as possible to provide any necessary treatment.

We ask that you bring no more than two visitors into the exam room with you to allow the pediatrician to provide you and your child with the highest quality care without distraction.

It is important to us that you fully understand any treatment or follow-up instructions given to you prior to leaving the Pediatric Urgent Care Center. Please ask any questions you may have about your child’s care and treatment, and feel free to call us with any future questions you may have.

Should I Bring My Older Child to Pediatric Urgent Care?

If your child is 18 years of age or older, he or she should be seen at PAMF’s Adult Urgent Care Center, regardless of whether his or her primary care physician is a pediatrician, family medicine physician or internal medicine physician.
