When you adopt a pet, you are choosing an animal, a friend that will be with you for his or her whole life. This can be from a few years to twenty or more, and they need you to take care of them.

When you adopt a pet, you go to the breeder, pound or animal shelter. You may spend anywhere between minutes and months, maybe even years, trying to find the right animal to suit your family's needs.

Some things to consider when you are looking for an animal:

  • How much room you have
  • If you have small children or elderly people living with you
  • What type of house you have
  • If your family moves a lot
  • What the rules are for where you live
  • What you would want the animal to be able to do, if you are active
  • If you are home a lot
The list is endless. But what you also should take into consideration is cost. Yes, you pay to buy the pet, but then there are vet bills, food, treats, toys and anything else your animal might need.

Another item to take into consideration, particularly for a dog, is if the dog has the right individual temperament. Some hybrids are good, while others can be bad. Wolf-dog hybrids are a bad choice, they can be temperamental and have many needs (for more information go to Howling Acres). Visit with any pet you are thinking about purchasing. Introduce them to the whole family to be sure they won’t react badly to any small children.

If you have other pets, ask if the pet you are considering has any history of aggression toward other animals or people.

In a way, getting a pet is like getting a sibling. It is fun and also lots of work. If your family wants a pet, take everything into consideration and fall in love with the perfect pet for you.
